Thailand customs, alcohol & vaping rules for Indian travellers

Quick answer: Entering Thailand, the duty-free alcohol allowance is no more than 1 litre per passenger. Electronic cigarettes are prohibited imports. Returning to India uses a different set of Indian Customs rules.

ENTERING THAILAND

1 litre alcohol per passenger

Thai Customs lists no more than 1 litre of alcoholic beverage in the duty-free allowance. Do not treat several family members' bottles as one pooled allowance inside one person's entitlement.

If you exceed an allowance or carry restricted goods, use the appropriate Customs channel instead of assuming duty-free shopping means automatic entry.

VAPES / E-CIGARETTES

Do not bring them into Thailand.

Thai Customs identifies electronic cigarettes among prohibited goods. This is not the place to rely on “my friend carried one last time.”

Cannabis / marijuana · travel warning

Do not bring cannabis home from Thailand.

Do not put cannabis flower, gummies, chocolates, infused tea, oils or other cannabis products in cabin or checked baggage. India’s NDPS Act, 1985 strictly controls narcotic drugs and psychotropic substances. Importing a controlled product can lead to seizure, arrest and serious criminal penalties. The exact legal treatment depends on the product and its contents; a “legal in Thailand” label is no defence at the Indian border.

Check every bag before flying: Do not keep leftover edibles, oils or products sold as CBD in your luggage. CBD products vary in contents and legal status; do not assume a cosmetic or medicine is cleared for international travel.
Layovers add risk: Singapore, Malaysia and the UAE restrict controlled drugs. Avoid carrying cannabis products on any itinerary through these hubs, including connecting flights. Laws and penalties depend on the jurisdiction and circumstances.
Thailand is not a free-for-all: Since June 2025, tourists cannot buy, carry or use cannabis flower without a valid prescription issued in Thailand by a licensed professional. A shop displaying it does not make a purchase lawful. Public smoking is forbidden; Thai tourism guidance describes penalties that may reach 25,000 THB or imprisonment. Beaches and streets are public places. Hotel balconies and rooms also depend on hotel rules and may attract extra charges.
Avoid accidental ingestion: Ask what is in unfamiliar sweets, drinks, teas or baked goods; check the ingredient list and ask staff directly. Do not rely on a leaf logo: packaging may be unclear. Keep unfamiliar products away from children. If someone becomes unwell after eating one, seek medical help promptly and show the package to the clinician.

CARRYING A LOT OF CASH?

Thai Baht (THB) 50,000 is not Thailand's arrival declaration limit.

Thai Customs' current currency declaration system requires declaration when entering or leaving with more than Thai Baht (THB) 450,000, or more than US$15,000 equivalent in foreign currency. The Thai Baht (THB) 50,000 figure relates to taking Thai Baht (THB) out to most countries, not arriving in Thailand.

Flying Back to India: Air Suvidha 2.0 Digital Self-Declaration

International passengers arriving in India are currently asked to complete the Air Suvidha 2.0 digital health Self-Declaration Form on the official portal before boarding. The form can be completed up to 24 hours before arrival.

• Email OTP verification: If your Indian SIM does not have active international roaming, the Air Suvidha login OTP can also be received on your registered email address. Keep email access working before you leave your hotel Wi-Fi.
• Timing: Do it before you leave for the airport; 4–12 hours before departure is a practical buffer when it falls within the official 24-hour submission window.
• Offline backup: Download the completed Self-Declaration Form (SDF) and save a screenshot/PDF on your phone. Current government guidance says travellers may be asked to show the downloaded SDF at the International Travel Health Desk or Immigration counter.

Air Suvidha 2.0 is free. Use only the official government portal and avoid lookalike sites asking for payment.

RETURNING TO INDIA

India has separate baggage rules.

Central Board of Indirect Taxes and Customs (CBIC) 2026 passenger guidance says allowances cannot be pooled with another passenger. Alcoholic liquor or wine in excess of 2 litres falls outside the duty-free allowance. Gold, high-value goods and other items have their own rules — declare when required instead of guessing at the green channel.
